I was lucky enough to visit Hong Kong when I was 11. Bloody Lovely's Sister Awesome Audrey and Uncle Huge lived there training people to fly planes before the take-over. I remember it quite well for only 11 years old - getting sun-stroke and Bloody lovely holding my hair back and not realising she had hold of my necklace and was strangling me causing me to gag even more. Going to the markets and Alleys buying what EVER we wanted - them were the days. Id kinda forgotten (or blocked out) the smells. Some of them THAT bad its put me off Chinese takeaway for the forseable future. I think, if I go back, Im gonna have to find some of that stuff morgue workers put under their noses. As it turns out - I am going back with my new job - on tuesday, but Im sure I'l get to that later.
What a fantastic place - bar the smells. The buzz that is Hong Kong Ive never found anywhere else. A sea of black hair (and some badly dyed blonde which makes an orange shade - why would you?) The drive from the airport to Kowloon is like stepping into the Avatar movie - Islands surrounded by a hazy fog - which I later found out is the pollution, Tall, tall sky rises like shards of glass, or Kriptonite from the 1980's Superman movies and the bustling streets - full of shoppers - with shopping bags - no sign of recession.
My hotel was special. They even turned down my bed, put a little rug to the side and left me a lovely note with the next days weather forecast.
After a quick trip into the office off I went to Sham Shu po - an area north of Kowloon FULL of little shops with my wildest dreams of beads, ribbons, jewels and more. What a fantastic place - if massively stinky.
I cant wait to go back here and start the bead/ribbon/button collection for my new work - how much am I gonna hate that! (sarcasm, dont you just love it).
